What Does SCEM K-9 Search Team Do? We search for any lost or missing person, live or deceased, at the request of a Public Service Agency (Law Enforcement, Fire/Rescue Department, FBI / KBI, Sheriff, etc). K-9's can assist these agencies in locating lost persons in: wilderness settings, urban environments, as well as collapsed structures (man-made or natural disasters), and others. We also have teams who perform: in water, on land, or buried. We can also provide a Forensic K-9 Search Team and perform some Evidence searches. The Sedgwick County Emergency Management K-9 Search Team is a professional volunteer organization. We formed in 2000 when members from other area organizations combined with the intent of increasing the SAR K-9 resources and capabilities in the Wichita/Sedgwick County Kansas area and beyond. We offer our services FREE-of-CHARGE to the requesting agency and the families they are assisting. We will not self-deploy. We may call and offer our services. Currently our team operates with 21 personnel and over 20 K-9's. K-9's are currently in varying stages of training and certifications. Our handlers have OVER a century of combined experience in Public Safety and K-9 SAR! Our team abilities and knowledge include, but are not limited to: Scent Theory Search Management Incident Command System Crime Scene Preservation Line Search Techniques Blood-borne Pathogens Community Emergency Response Team Trainers (CERT) First Aid and CPR (Human and K9) Radio Communications Storm Spotters Awareness High Angle Rescue Techniques Variety of Medical and Law Enforcement Backgrounds Our team has a variety of equipment that aid us in searching for lost persons including: GPS (Global Positioning Systems) APRS (Automatic Position Radio Systems) Laptop Computers Water Search Boat K-9 Rehab & Transport Van Two Specialized K-9 Rappelling Harnesses 800 MHz Radio, FRS and Amateur Radios (HAM) and more! K-9's perform several types of search functions. They include Wilderness Search, Human Remains Detection (water or land), Forensic Search, Evidence, Disaster Search and Tracking/Trailing. Our team DOES NOT respond to searches for drugs, bombs, or arson investigations. But we can put you in contact with those in our area who do.
