Tributes and Memories
This page has been posted to pay tribute to our dogs past and
present. It features several poems pertaining to the lives of our animal friends
that we have found and collected from several places. If you know who is the
author of any, please notify us so we can give them proper credit. Please
scroll down to read about some of our rescued friends!

The Team dogs below
were rescued from Humane Societies, rescue groups, or were strays.
We now consider them
our working partners and we are proud they let us share their lives.
K-9 Buddy is in his fifth (and final) home. He was scheduled to be
euthanized if a working home could not be found for him in time. His previous
owner did not have time to work the dog. He is a phenomenal
worker and a great joy to have around. Buddy would play fetch until he collapsed
and loves attention from anyone who will give it to him! He now resides happily with the
Guinns.
He is pictured here with his Mom during a Fall 2001 trip to the Colorado Cuchara
Mountains. (Probably his first vacation anywhere, and he did some Bear
watching for us during our first hour there!)
K-9 Jake (AKA Knucklehead) is a rescue from our local Humane Society. His
handler Mark came to the shelter to adopt a Labrador puppy, but all were adopted
before he arrived. Jake seemed to fit the bill and now has a great new home.
Jake loves to go on camping trips with Dad in the North Eastern United States.
He has definitely earned his keep and is our "First Out" canine in
Disaster and Building searches!
K-9 Poncho. Poncho was first adopted by Amanda Ford's brother when a
boxful of puppies were to be taken to the Humane Society if no homes were found
for them that day. Six months later he called Amanda asking to keep the dog
"until the fence got up". Nearly 3 years later, Poncho still resides
with Amanda.
K-9 Prymer was originally brought to the Kansas Humane
Society as a stray dog. He quickly found a new home, but his new family also
quickly found he was not a couch potato after he ate an expensive leather coat
and other items in the home! He was then returned to the shelter. The animal
behaviorist from the Humane Society (Dr. Emily Weiss) called Amanda Ford to tell
her about the dog that "needed a job" and he is now in training with
SCEM K9. (He is pictured here being silly while Steph Guinn teases him with
spaceship noises!)
K-9 Sophie Sue came from Southeast Bloodhound
Rescue in Carrollton Georgia. She had been picked up by Animal Control in
Romulus Michigan. Several people assisted in getting Sophie to Lt. Terrie Clark.
The rescue group got her to someone who was attending a SAR seminar in
Mississippi. From there Larry Taylor picked Sophie up, kept her for a week at
his home and then brought her to Wichita for Terrie, where he was attending
another SAR dog event. Sophie loves to "snuffle" babies!

K-9 Alvin. Robyn Roberts had been completing chores
and found Alvin wandering on a country road about 3 1/2 miles from her home near
the river. He appeared to be in distress and not knowing what to do. Robyn took
the dog to the river to get a drink but he didn't seem to understand that it was
OK to drink from it. Robyn then went to numerous farm houses and he did not
belong to anyone nor had they seen him before and all agreed he had been dumped
by an owner who no longer wished to have his company. Alvin is a lively and
energetic boy! He is a very promising wilderness and disaster dog. Speak ,Alvin,
Speak!

On the Breeze...
Our
lives are as feathers or leaves dropping from the trees,
We
take the turns that life has dealt, blowing in the breeze.
Whether
we fall to the ground and are stepped on by the days passerby's,
Or
saved by a child whos filled with fascination in their eyes...
Whether
we become hardened and fragile, wither and break into tiny pieces and to shreds,
Sometimes
we do not choose where we get to lay down our heads.
But
when one comes along who respects such life and beauty...
It
is then we come to realize we are not to be filled with self-pitty.
The
leaf and the feather fill the world with color and with graceful cheer.
Sometimes
they come along to fill a void and/or dry a dropping tear.
It
is only then we realize the mystery of the small things on this earth,
And
how just one saved life can fill the void and prove to us its living worth.
Stephanie Guinn, 2003
"He is your friend,
your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."
