SCEMK9 participated
again in the 2004 5th Grade Fire Prevention Zoo Adventure at the Sedgwick
County Zoo on September 30th. All the dogs were phenomenal with meeting over
3,000 5th graders, zoo keepers, parents, and teachers. The dogs behavior goes to
show the positive effect our temperament evaluations, obedience and socialization
training has had on our team. The dogs behaved beautifully being constantly
surrounded and pet by children, loud and chaotic noises and other animals.

Handler Amanda Ford visits with children and talks about what the dogs do and
how they are trained, while K-9 Prymer and K-9 Clarice soak up some attention!
These pictures show the multitude of children that were constantly surrounding
the dogs at all times. K-9 Anne is always a big hit with kids! The last photo is
K-9 Poncho with one of her youngest fans!

behind. K-9 Sadie's soft silky coat attracted many curious children!

SCEMK9 was invited
to participate in the CERT Disaster Drill in Oklahoma this past August. This
scenario was a bombing of a welfare building with persons trapped. We look forward to
providing the canine assistance in next years drill! Photos by DeAnn Konkel.
Look for video that was shot by our team later!
SCEMK9 and CERT Team Member Mike Jackson helps walking wounded leave the scene
of the disaster, assesses a critically injured patient and extricates them on a
long spine board with the assistance of the Sedgwick County Fire Department
firefighters .
Several members of the National Guard, Wichita and Sedgwick County Fire
Departments, KS Fire Marshall's Office, CERT Team and SCEMK9 meet to discuss the
plan at the scenario.

treatment area.
SCEMK9 and the Sedgwick County Heavy Rescue Team gather a plan for searching the
building with canines and Handler Stephanie Guinn prepares with Clarice, a
disaster search dog.
K-9 Clarice searches the area for scent of a live victim, first finding cadaver
scent then pinpointing live scent under the rubble by sticking her head through
cinder blocks to where the victim is located. Both canines searched the
buildings and rubble in 100 degree heat with high humidity in the middle of the
day. It was a difficult task to ask of them with the surface temperature of the
pile reaching over 110 degrees.
Handler Terrie Clark and Angus prepare for their search of the same area and go
to work in side the building and on the pile. Angus is a building search and
area search dog, but mastered the rubble well.
CERT, SCEMK9, and Sedgwick County FD Heavy Rescue extricate the victim from
beneath the rubble!
CERT Members in SCEMK9 are Mike Jackson, Tui Jackson, Tom Pletcher, and
Terrie Clark.
Bill Weppler and Barry Guinn are CERT Instructors as well as
SCEMK9 members.

Several short training sessions were held for the dogs with the officers on
horseback as flankers. All the dogs ignored the horses when it came time to
search. Good job guys!

is great for teaching the dogs unstable footing and negotiating obstacles. The
second photos is Steph navigating part of the pile to hide for AndyDog of
