Public Safety
If there is any single issue about which all Americans are concerned about is public safety. Any injury caused intentionally or due to negligence is a threat to public safety. Gang crime, drug abuse, drunken driving, extortion and any other form of crime, all are cause of concern for public safety.
In recent times the worst form of concern for public safety has been international terrorism. Terrorists devise new methods and ways of destructing public life and property. They even put up unreasonable and unacceptable demands before the competent authorities and dare to sacrifice their lives for the wrong reasons while committing crimes.
“Prevention is better than cure” is the age old proven adage. Therefore, law should be used to take preventive measures to check both violent and unintentional injury to public. It is better to prevent a future threat before it builds up and causes a serious damage. Prescribing a limit for the blood alcohol concentration for motorcar drivers is an example of a good preventive measure to safeguard public safety.
The Public Safety Performance Project provides research, analysis and expertise to different states across the US and helps them to analyze data relating to who has been admitted into prisons for how long and what are its implications on public safety and the state budget. The state courts also provide timely information to maintain public safety by using IBM Web-sphere Software. Many courts provide information on habitual offenders and their cases to the entire court system for benefit of the public safety.
In order to maintain lasting public safety more efforts should be made to provide and take timely informed decisions, and capabilities should be strengthened to track and identify suspects across the state. This many believe is only possible if new laws are enacted in the United States.
