Agility Course: Phase I
Construction on our new rubble field began Nov. 5th! Many thanks to the Sedgwick County Department of Public Works, Sedgwick County Department of Public Safety, and Cornejo and Sons Construction for all their help on this project! This site will be a great asset to our Disaster Canines pursuing FEMA certification currently. For more info see the Disaster Search Page. Photos of the site and the construction can be found here very, very soon! SCEMK9 has been currently training at the site and plans to expand will be completed within the month of January! (1-2-04)
The agility course has been weather sealed and new items are being constructed as well as an additional training site being established. Check back here for additional info! (9-3-04) The agility course will definitely test our Team's K-9's and their abilities. It is comprised of varying elevations of catwalks, ramps, ladders, and unstable surfaces (tire and chain link included). The computer drawings do not show the hardware that will be used on the Tower to train the handlers in raising and lowering systems and harness work with the dogs. It's design adequately allows for future expansion and additions. The agility area will also house other pieces of ground level equipment that is not stationary to include a teeter-totter, tunnel, A-frame, bark barrel, and other elements that can be moved and changed for different exercises for the dogs.
A view of the first stairway to the short platform and a view from the short platform to the left up the Advanced Ramp and Rappel Tower. The railing is up on the tower, it is now awaiting netting to be secured around it for added safety and fall protection. The far right photo shows the Elevated Plank immediately to the right of the Ramp.
Above is a view of the Elevated Catwalk from the short platform. It is approximately 5-6 feet up. To see the Adjustable Catwalk, click here. The Adjustable walk is the first step in mastering the above obstacle. Two of the disaster dogs have already shown great proficiency!). The netting shown above is professional webbing and will be used as fall protection for the dogs underneath this walk and the Advanced Ramp to the Rappel Tower. The netting has been tested by team members and should have no problems supporting the weight of our K-9's if ever needed.
This is a view of the tower from the side. The catwalk is shadowed on the left. Additional items that are being constructed now are the Unstable Bridge that will hang independently under the catwalk, and can be accessed from the lowest platforms you see on the left side of the photo. There will also be a variety of access points to each of the three towers via a tire walk and a different ladder concept. MORE PHOTOS AS THE COURSE CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES! Thanks to "The guys" at Station 300 for allowing us the space to build! For more information about this project, please contact Tom Hammond.
